“Why would you not want to get paid while you learn instead of getting into debt?”

Merryn Kay didn’t get the A’level results she’d hoped for and took a year out working in retail before she found her apprenticeship to become a therapy assistant.

Now aged 22 she’s on her way to gaining a full degree debt free, she explains how.

My A’level results weren’t what I’d hoped for and I thought the best thing to do was get a job while I figured out what to do next.

I got a job in retail which was ok but I knew I wanted to get back into education to improve my career prospects.

The problem was I didn’t really know what I wanted to do at that point. I’d always had an idea that I’d like to work in a hospital and I found out about the apprenticeships available at North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust.

I was so pleased to be successful in applying, I now have an NVQ level 3 qualification as a therapy assistant.

I haven’t stopped there either, I’m now doing my foundation degree in health and wellbeing whilst working on a care for the elderly ward at Peterborough City Hospital. After that my plan is to gain my full degree in Occupational Therapy all whilst I earn.

The best thing about what I do is working with patients and getting them home safely knowing I’ve made a difference.

I really enjoy my role, working with the patients and helping people and to me it makes no sense to get yourself into debt when you can choose an apprenticeship instead.

Why would you not want to get paid while you learn instead of getting into debt?
